Pablo Back Home on Creating and Working while Exploring the World
With 29 countries under his belt, Pablo’s been able to work along the way, find his own perspective as a creator, and really embrace a work-life balance that fuels his creative side.
Tell us about yourself and how long you’ve been traveling and content creating.
My name’s Pablo Menendez, 27 years old, from Madrid, Spain. I am currently based in London as I moved here 6 months ago because I needed a change in my life. After I quit my job last March in Spain, I joined the freelancing world and also I start traveling more often.
I have been traveling since 2015 when I discovered Norway with my family on a road trip. It was my first time traveling out of Spain and I was in shock. I have never had interested on traveling, but when I saw these beautiful landscapes, wonderful and enormous waterfalls I changed my mind.
So how long have you been traveling?
After 2015 I decided changed my life. The Norway roadtrip was in the summer, so in September I decided to go to New York. Then Ireland, Thailand, Switzerland, Morocco, Iceland, Italy, France, Belgium, Slovenia. Now it has been more than 30 countries. You can see more on my Youtube channel
My home base is currently here in London. I rented a room with my girlfriend because most of the time I am traveling for work or just to enjoy. She also loves traveling too— in fact, we met in a travel event almost two years ago. What a coincidence!
What motivates you to pursue traveling extensively?
Get out of my comfort zone. When I spend a few weeks in the same place I start feeling like I’m living on a circle. That’s why I need traveling often. The need of discovering new places, meet people and also create content.
I love to create stories but even more film nature and landscapes. That’s why most of my travels are on nature destinations.
Also travel helps me be able to do things I don’t usually do when I am at home. You feel you are able to do anything, and I love that feeling.
How were you able to carve out your own unique path for traveling and working?
It is so hard to keep balancing between traveling and working. During my last three months trip around Israel, Jordan and Cyprus I have been working to create videos for hotels and also travel videos for my personal brand.
Sometimes I felt I did not enjoy too much the places I have been. But I think the key is try to get a few days every time to just rest in a unique place, grab your computer, work hard and then put the things in order to keep traveling.
What has been your most eye-opening country? Can you tell us more about that experience?
For me the most eye opening country was definitely Indonesia! Every time I found local people they always smiled at me. Really, that was true happiness. When I came back to Spain it was so hard finding people not looking at their phones or heads down everytime.
Besides, Southeast Asia is so friendly, cheap and also beautiful. A dream I had always in my mind is stay for a while living there.
How do you maintain community and connection when you’re on the road?
In this age it’s very important having a great audience and also offer a good content because of the works you can get from it. For example, most of the brands I have been working for they contact me because my content but also because of my solid community.
The best advice I would say try to create a solid community, offer new content and help them when they claim it.
How do you balance working while traveling? When do you find time to edit versus time to experience a new city?
As I said before, it is a hard thing. The best way for me is resting a few days of visiting a city or place and just focusing on the edit process. This is the time I spend to create new ideas, thing about the upcoming videos and edit the old ones I have been working on the past few days.
Sometimes the creativity just shows up and then I need to work suddenly. If you are a content creator, artist or creative you will know what I was talking about.
What’s next for you in the upcoming year? What are you excited about?
I don’t even know. The only thing I hope is coming is keep growing as a travel filmmaker and working more with tourism boards. It has been a great year as a professional freelancer. I have worked with a brand for an advertising campaign, I am currently planning a shooting on different locations for Murcia tourism next week. Things are going slow, but I couldn’t more grateful for that.
Had to ask, what’s your favorite Croissant space?
If I had to choose one of them, I would say La Vaca coworking space in Barcelona, Spain. Awesome space, wonderful light and many plants and green. I really love it!
